In the Garden
Did you test your soil last fall? Good growers test every couple of years to make sure they are balancing the needs of their crops with the rotations and inputs they’re adding to the soil. Remember – any time you harvest something and transfer that organic matter into you stomach! you are taking something away from your soil that needs to be replaced somehow. That would happen slowly over time from adding organic materials and good crop rotations, or you can test your soil and look for the specific nutrients you need to add in more precise amounts. Focus on pH, organic matter %, phosphorous, potassium, calcium and magnesium in your test results. Nitrogen is also very important but fluctuates easily and is hard to get accurate tests for the home garden. Maintaining healthy soil with a pH of 6.5-7, an organic matter percentage over 3 percent and adding a small amount of a nitrogen and calcium source every year should take care of most nutrients. Home gardeners probably only need to test every 4 or 5 years to help make their garden the best it can be. Check with the L.U. soil lab this spring – it’s inexpensive and easy to do (provided the ground isn’t frozen solid like right now!!) Your local garden centres should also have an expert around to consult on good quality inputs for your garden come spring.
