Good Food
Superior Seasons is hoping to have a lot more vegetables to offer in future years. The Greenbelt Foundation (with funding from the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food) recently awarded Belluz Farms a portion of the money required to build a new crop storage and packing facility. We are still looking for partners to help with the construction and financing, but are very excited about the possibility for local growers to produce, store and sell more carrots, beets, onions, cabbage and garlic throughout the winter!

New Vendor
Sleepy G Farm has joined the store! Please visit their profile to learn more about them and their products. Click Here

How does Superior Seasons Work?
Superior Seasons Food Market Store is an online ordering system designed to combine orders from multiple local businesses into one, convenient transaction for customers. It also allows vendors to pick/create exactly what was ordered, and streamlines administration so they can focus on quality and production (not going home with produce from market or running out of 1 item too early). It was founded and is operated by Belluz Farms to help enhance our business as well as create an efficient distribution model for primarily smaller businesses to get their product to market. To qualify to use the store, each grower or artisan must be actively managing their business sustainably with a focus on contributing to our local community. They are also verified professionals working with long term vision to make a better local food system.

Check out these Q’s and A’s for more detailed info HERE. There’s NO Membership fees required until after you’ve tried the system twice for FREE.

Good Food
Holiday season is about celebrating things together with family. Good food helps make that special (or reminds you of family meal traditions that we don’t seem to get around to enough). Superior Seasons is trying to help you source good foods often of types or varieties more like you remember from childhood as opposed to the varieties bred for long distance trucking found in most other stores. Try us out! Or please share this email with a friend you think might be interested.

In the Fields
Snow, snow, snow. I know it’s a pain to shovel, but it sure makes us growers feel better knowing there’s protection over top of our perennials (like strawberries, raspberries, alfalfa hay, etc) and something to melt and provide soil moisture come spring. I hesitate to mention spring moisture because the last 2 years have been too wet, but historically having good snow cover starts a season off right!

Terra Madre Day
Today is Terra Madre day. A great day to celebrate food and think local. Click here to learn more. We work to make Superior Seasons one of the places you can trust to supply good, clean and fair food products from verified sources.

In the Garden
It will happen. There will be a nice weekend day that you will just want to get into the garden and work and plant and enjoy. It will happen. Yesterday was not it. Today – probably not. But maybe this week. Don’t worry, it’s not too late. We can’t even plant too many things yet in this here part of the world due to risks of frost right up until June. Get your pea, carrot, lettuce seed ready. Grab some broccoli, cabbage, onion transplants and stick all that in the ground first chance you get. It will be great. BTW, did you know most market gardeners plant onions from transplants NOT from sets? It’s cheaper and works just as well. Happy Mother’s Day everyone.

In the Garden
Nothing much is happening in the garden is it? A little sunshine will work wonders now that the snow is mostly gone. Chives, rhubarb, garlic, fiddleheads, asparagus – oh the things to look forward to. Until then, find a greenhouse grower with some greens online here or at the Country Market or in The True North Community Coop and live vicariously through them!

In the Garden
The ground is starting to unthaw as the snow melts! Spring run-off is a great time to assess the flow/drainage of water around your growing areas. While we’re not likely to see similar levels of water all at once again, you can definitely watch where it’s gathering or doing the most damage and plan to divert or restructure those areas. A little planning will mitigate damage to future crops in that spot. There’s nothing worse (remember last year) than planting a big section of your garden only to see it wiped out in a rain event. As soon as you can get the soil loosened up and warmed a bit, you can think about planting cold tolerant crops. Its a bit of a risk this early, but if you’re only doing small areas it won’t take long and there’s a big reward to have the first peas/carrots/beets/lettuce in the neighbourhood. Check our our seed starting pamphlet for more info – it’s free to download and there’s some great seeds available online too.

In the Superior Seasons Weekly
If you read below you’ll see the collection of social media stories that paper.li curates for us. One of them is a story Michael Pollan re-tweeted about glyphosate (round-up) health dangers. What didn’t show up is that Pollan later tweeted that the story was dubious due to a lack of proper research – and this despite it being originally published by Reuters! Ahh, the perils of instant communication. Another good reminder to be as thorough as possible in forming our opinions. Of course you can just blindly trust everything we write…

Earth Day Edition

Good (Earth) Day

Ordering Reminders! We are still offering HOME DELIVERY to Individual customers on Wednesdays! CLICK HERE, until Monday at 4:30 pm for Wednesday options. Deliveries occur normally between 12 and 2pm, but let us know if that doesn’t work for you and we’ll try to accommodate.

Earth Day
Hopefully earth day makes you think of food! With so many great local options showing up on our store, at the Country Market, or at True North Community Co-op – you have great choices already this season to support local agriculture.

Caribou Restaurant is also having a Earth Day theme tonight by offering mostly local specials! Check it out HERE. I think there’s still lots of space available AND each diner gets a $10 coupon for Belluz Farms Garden Centre and a package of heirloom/organic garden seeds!

One of the media themes lately has been the idea that we need to produce more and more food for a growing middle class around the world. In reality, we waste close to 50% of the food farmers produce due to the distribution systems involved and the desire to have everything available everywhere whenever anyone might decide they want it. Maybe instead of just growing more, we can do more with what we grow already?

In the Garden
The first greens are coming out of greenhouses now, the farm animals are having their babies, the soil is loose and ready…(okay 2 out of 3 isn’t bad). While this weather seems daunting, it hasn’t impacted the growing season yet. With a frost free date still far away in early June, there’s only a few things that you could really plant soon anyways. Check our our seed starting pamphlet for more info – it’s free to download and there’s some great seeds available online too.
